A Good Call: Supporting Students in Tanzania

Ruvuma Development Aid (RUDA) is a Scottish charity dedicated to improving the lives of families in the Ruvuma Region of Tanzania. As part of this, they supported the development of a nursery, primary and secondary school in the Namanditi area, giving young people access to quality education, allowing them to build knowledge and skills to support their future careers.

Throughout the years, they have sponsored 53 students at the schools, some of whom have now moved on to government high schools or college. With a further 12 students set to progress to college or university this year, it became evident that they would need access to digital devices to support their further education. That’s where we come in.

We recently partnered with RUDA to deliver a number of smartphones to students in Namanditi – and the devices have already made a big impact.

The phones have allowed students to access online learning materials, ensuring they have the resources and tools they need to study effectively. Beyond this, they have also improved communication between RUDA and the sponsored students, ensuring any issues or queries can be flagged and resolved more efficiently. They have also enabled the pupils to access online resources to support their studies. Perhaps most importantly, the phones have given the students the confidence they need to continue their education away from home by providing a reliable line of communication to stay in touch with their families.

One student, 19-year-old Angelus, adds: “I have wanted a smartphone for so long, this is my dream.” For many students like Angelus, these devices are a lifeline and bring hope for the future.

Your donations help us to provide the tools young people need to access real opportunities in life. If you have any unwanted computers, laptops or other devices, please do head to our ‘Give Computers’ page to learn how you can help support more projects like this.
