This month, we sat down with volunteer Russell to learn more about his journey with the Turing Trust.
Russell began volunteering with us after moving to Scotland back in 2021. Having previously served as a trustee for various charities down South, he was keen to find a local role that was aligned with his interests and would allow him to continue driving positive change.
Our mission and values piqued Russell’s interest, presenting an opportunity to build new skills, forge new friendships in the area, and most importantly, make a difference. After meeting our incredible team and volunteers, he knew he’d made the right decision. Fast forward three years, and Russell is still with us, helping to bring life-changing IT equipment to students across the world.

Like many of our volunteers, Russell works full time. While his job keeps him busy, he always finds a few hours each week to dedicate to his volunteer work. He often joins us in the workshop on Friday afternoons, helping him to disconnect from the pressures of his job and unwind for the weekend.
Russell finds volunteering with the Turing Trust both “enjoyable” and “rewarding”, allowing him to develop his IT skills and meet with like-minded people while helping to drive meaningful change. Throughout the years, he has made an impact in every corner of our workshop and has proven to be a fantastic addition to the team. Russell is always willing to get stuck in and try new things, from wiping devices to loading containers, and we are so grateful to have him on our team.
As a charity, we rely on volunteers like Russell to keep driving our work forward. We’re always keen to welcome new faces to our Edinburgh HQ, so if you’d like to get involved and help make a difference in 2025, we’d love to hear from you!
