As a charity, we’re committed to making digital resources more accessible for those who need them most. Whilst most of our work involves partnering with other organisations and schools, each year, we support a small number of individuals from our local community directly via our Social IT fund.
One of those individuals is Michelle, a 61-year-old woman from Edinburgh. When Michelle first reached out to our team, she felt deeply isolated, with her loss of eyesight making it challenging to go out into the community unassisted.
Michelle requested a laptop to help her stay connected without the anxiety of having to leave the house alone – and what a difference it’s made.
The donated laptop has not only enabled her to communicate again, but has also given her a means to apply for jobs and regain her independence.
Having a reliable laptop means I can apply for jobs without fear that it will die or freeze in the middle of a submission on an employer’s website or partway through tailoring my CV.
She adds: “We don’t realise how much we rely on technology until we no longer have access to it. From the bottom of my heart, again, thank you to all of you.”
Feedback like this highlights just how impactful your pre-loved devices can be. If you have a computer, laptop, tablet or mobile phone you no longer need, why not donate it and help create new opportunities for people across the globe?
