Kolibri Hardware Grant winners

We’ve won a Learning Equality Kolibri Hardware grant! Our team are looking forward to getting started with the project and seeing the positive impact it’ll have on our schools.

What does this mean for the Turing Trust?

Over the next year, we’ll be working closely with two schools in Mzuzu to trial the introduction of Learning Equality’s Kolibri platform. We will support the schools throughout the year, providing training and assistance to enable them to tailor the platform to their needs and tie the offline resources to the curriculum.

You can view the Turing Trust’s collated resources via our publicly available, open-source, e-Library channel by using the Kolibri platform. To view our e-Library please use the channel token ID “kanak-kuhov”. To install the content please follow these instructions.

Who are Learning Equality?

Learning Equality is a San Diego-based educational charity set up to tackle global challenges. Worldwide, one in every five children, adolescents and youth is out of school, and one in six are not reaching minimum proficiency in reading or mathematics – the majority of which are in school. To tackle this, Learning Equality launched KA Lite in 2012. This has now brought offline access to Khan Academy content to 5,000,000 learners in 200 locations worldwide.

What is Kolibri?

Kolibri is an open-source educational platform that is specially designed to provide offline access to a curated and openly licensed educational content library with tools for pedagogical support for use in low-resource and low-connectivity contexts. It builds on lessons and feedback from its predecessor platform, KA Lite, which brought Khan Academy videos and exercises offline.

The “Educator Ready” Kolibri release (v0.10) contains new features such as tagging of coach-specific content, detailed answer history in learner exercises, and improved performance. Other updates in this version include auto-play videos, a more responsive login page, more reliable and easy-to-use content import/export and overall improved performance! It allows teachers to import as much educational content as they need from a wealth of sources from Khan Academy to the University of Colorado’s PhET as well as track students’ progress through self-paced learning.

Kolibri v0.10 is available in English, Arabic, Bengali, Burmese, Chinyanja, Farsi, French, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Yoruba, and Zulu.

We believe that Kolibri will have a marked impact on the way IT is used as an educational platform in the schools we’re working with and can’t wait to see the results.
