Andrew Clark demonstrated the prototype SolarBerry to colleagues and volunteers in Edinburgh. The prototype was to demonstrate the proof of concept and even the sun in Edinburgh was strong enough to power the Raspberry Pi and allow multiple users to connect wirelessly using their phones. Calculations based on the likely solar power available in Malawi and 7-day usage estimate that the battery will be 85% charged at the end of a week – but of course in practice the unit may only be used in the daytime Monday to Friday and 2-3 evenings a week, so there should be more than enough capacity. There is still plenty of work to do – but this was a great start to the project and gives us plenty to build on.
