teacher training using donated laptops

Your Donations in Action | The Gunjur Project Association

Computers play a key role in our society and can have a big impact on education, careers and more. As technology continues to evolve, so too does our education system. As such, we’re seeing an increasing number of schools across the globe looking to integrate it into the classroom to leverage the many benefits and keep up with changing demands. Having access to IT will not only benefit students, but teachers too.

  • Boost their understanding of key subject areas
  • Streamline admin processes
  • Offer access to updated teaching and learning materials
  • Enable them to prepare and print exam questions for students
  • Gather data to inform the regional Department of Education

The above examples are just a few of the reasons the Gunjur Project Association has organised four IT training days for teachers from Foni, Gunjur and its satellite villages. We’re proud to be able to support this project with a number of donated laptops which will enable teachers across The Gambia to enhance their lessons and access vital digital resources. Some of the teachers invited to join the IT training days share their thoughts and feedback below.

Omar K Touray, a teacher at Gunjur Senior School, shares his experience of using technology to enhance his lessons.

“I have 22 years of experience and I teach students between the age of 15 and 22. I love teaching because it allows me to share my knowledge with people. I am involved in a range of extracurricular activities, including providing extra classes to support students during weekends and school holidays through the Gunjur Project Association Summer School Staff (GPASSS). The E-learning course for teachers will help me to get teaching materials from the internet, and gather and save information for students. Computers are quick, easy and reliable to keep information.”

Sanna Darboe is a teacher at WYCE Basic Cycle School. He has been in teaching for 13 years and is keen to have a positive impact on the lives of children within his community.

Sanna explains how important it is for him to be part of the IT training offered by The Gunjur Project Association, saying: ?It will help me to download teaching and learning aids from the internet which will be very useful in the classroom.”

Mariama Touray, a teacher at Anne Grether Basic Cycle School shares her journey into teaching below.

“I decided to become a teacher at a very early age with the vision of sharing the knowledge I have with people. Being a teacher has inspired me to acquire more knowledge and experience and I have now started my studies at Gambia College! Being part of the IT training will help me to enhance my teaching process by making teaching aids for my students.”

We also caught up with Mariama S Sanyang, a teacher at Gunjur Secondary School, who said: “I feel so lucky to be part of this training as information technology really influences teaching and learning and helps us to access teaching aids.” Musa Bojang of WYCE Basic Cycle School builds on this saying, “Having access to the IT training helps me to improve my skills and knowledge and aids more effective teaching and learning by providing access to resources.”
