Giving New Life to Your Old Tech with The Welcoming & DigiUK

Our DigiUK Project aims to bridge the digital divide for disadvantaged youth by providing laptops, tablets and other devices to various organisations across the UK.

Since launching the project in 2023, we’ve distributed over 900 devices, which have already made a significant impact. The feedback from The Welcoming, outlined below, highlights just a few ways your donated devices are making a difference.

The Welcoming is a Scottish charity that supports asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in Edinburgh through a range of services, including English language classes and employment support workshops, designed to help them settle into their new homes in Scotland.

As part of our DigiUK Project, we recently donated 40 laptops and one smartphone to support their work here in Edinburgh. The devices are being used to improve access to digital resources, helping to enhance employability and support the education and training of beneficiaries.

“Abel, a 29-year-old refugee from Eritrea, was delighted to receive a laptop from The Turing Trust, because this gave him the opportunity to study for his driving theory test and start the process of registering with Edinburgh City Council as a taxi driver, which is what he used to do in Eritrea.

Abel is also using his laptop to join online English classes with The Welcoming and improve his grammar and vocabulary. He really enjoys exploring different websites and study resources, and feels his English is improving every day. He’s also becoming more confident with his digital literacy. Before receiving the laptop, he did everything on his phone, and didn’t have much experience of typing in English. He’s now more comfortable with the keyboard and his typing speed is improving.”

The feedback below outlines how your donations are supporting the work of The Welcoming and creating new opportunities for their beneficiaries in Scotland.

“I came to Scotland from Afghanistan, where I was working as an assistant professor, a few months ago. The regime there froze my bank account so my wife and I had no choice but to apply for asylum in the UK.

I am now studying for a Master’s at Queen Margaret University. Thank you for this laptop. It will help me complete assignments, prepare presentations and do research.”

– Noor

“Thank you so much for giving me this laptop. It will help me join online English classes, improve my English and join an ESOL course at Edinburgh College next semester. It’s very important for me and my future in Scotland.”

– Jasem Daher

“I am having a baby in February, so I can’t go to college in person. The laptop will allow me to join online classes with The Welcoming and improve my English. Thank you!”
